Terminology

The technology industry, like many others, is full of terminology that is alien to those who don't fully understand the jargon. So, here is my humble attempt to clear up, some but not all terminology!

  • DNS - Domain Name System: a network system used to translate names into IP addresses, see DNS for more details
  • Gb - Gigabit: 1 gigabit = 1,000,000,000 bits (or 109)
  • Gbit - see Gb
  • GB - Gigabyte: this has two definitions, base 10 where 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes (or 1,0003) and base 2 where 1 GB = 1,073,741,824 bytes (or 1,0243)
  • Mb - Megabit, see also Gb
  • MB - Megabyte, see also GB
